Enjoy the Delectable Taste of Music with Etienne Charles
“I want people leaving my show feeling full musically,” says Etienne Charles, whose accolades include being the recipient of the Caribbean Heritage Trailblazer award, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Millennial award, and has the honor of being written into the US Congressional Record for his musical contributions to the art form.
In his latest album “Creole Orchestra” which debuts June 26th, Charles takes listeners into the world of Big band where he draws influences from legends of the swing era including Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey – while adding his style of Trinidad culture and sound.
Charles explains the kinship between Big band and Calypso music dates back to WWII when Allied Forces leased land in Trinidad for its Air Force bases and brought in radio stations to boost troop morale. That was the beginning of a blended musical style where Jazz and Calypso influenced one another.
Charles’ album showcases a fusion of Big band mixed with Reggae, Hip Hop, Calypso, and Brazilian sound. “It’s a fun album” added Charles, “it makes you feel like dancing.”
For his upcoming performance – Mad Jazz Presents “A Night in the Caribbean with Etienne Charles and Creole Soul” taking place on July 27th at the Silk Mill in Fredericksburg, VA- Charles compares his show to a tasting menu, where his audience can savor every taste musically. When asked to choose one word to capture an Etienne Charles performance, “delectable” is what came to mind.
Taking a bite of his musical sound transforms in a way that makes the experience feel good socially. “Come participate in the fellowship” reflects Charles to his listeners.
